To do list: get apartment, get work visa etc
Time is flying by so quickly it is difficult to know where to start this entry!! My work visa came through and we went ahead with the seaside apartment that was shown on my last entry. It was quite an achievement, I think, to manage to agree and sign the 6 month contract for the apartment - or at least I think that is what I signed as it was all in Chinese. The landlord asked me in Mandarin if I would be going home at Christmas to see my children and I jokingly said 'no, because you have taken all my money'. Mr Lin has quite a sense of humour and appreciated the joke. Mark and I moved in immediately and over the next few days we made our mark on the place in terms of cleaning and tidying. Every morning when I wake up I am amazed at the views of the sea from every window. The only downside is that because it is a river delta the colour is frequently brown (because of the silt) and unfortunately, litter floats in with the high tide!

Nothing is guaranteed in China. Mark had his interviews and both he and I were told by several different people that the job was in the bag. On the strength of that we met with the Taiwanese owner of the apartment and put a small deposit (£30) down to secure it. The owner, Mr Lim, was completely bowled over by my knowledge of Mandarin and with my ability to barter in a foreign language, so much so that he said ‘ni shi yi yang de Zhongguo ren’ (‘you are like a Chinese person’) which I took as a compliment.

Final Days in HK...
A great deal and nothing has happened since I last wrote. Our stay at the Louis Business Hotel was short and sweet. It was beautiful (although somewhat noisy) in our little garret room which had obviously been recently refurbished. We had a little kitchenette area, including a kettle, microwave, sink and fridge (without the intrusive minibar). During the day Mark continued his Internet work and I continued to explore.
